Airlines urge govt to resolve airport troubles

Frustrated by unresolved deficiencies at Suvarnabhumi Airport, airlines are calling on the new Samak Sundaravej govt to urgently find solutions to get the trouble-plagued facility running properly. 'Suvarnabhumi is in a coma,' said Jaiyavat Navaraj, chairman of the Airline Operators Committee (AOC). He said it was vital for all parties to quickly rectify the airport's problems, many of which have not been fixed since it opened in September 2006. Planners also need to expand the airport, which is already being used to its capacity of 45m passenger a year. Jaiyavat urged that issues surrounding Suvarnabhumi be included on the national agenda with highest priority. He charged that Airports of Thailand had focused too heavily on raising revenue from airport charges rather than turning Bangkok's new international airport into an aviation hub.
