Four dead after Bangkok shooting spree
BANGKOK : Four people - including the attacker - were killed on Wednesday and six injured when a Thai gunman went on a shooting spree in a market on the outskirts of Bangkok, police said.

Kiattipong Meksawat, 28, was apparently enraged when police seized his motorcycle, and stalked through a market in Pathumthani province, north of Bangkok, shooting dead a villager, a security guard and a police officer.

After a two-hour pursuit, police shot and killed Kiattipong, who was wielding an AK-47 and wearing night vision goggles, police lieutenant colonel Permkiat Suriyawong told AFP.

"The gunman shot indiscriminately," Permkiat said. "Police successfully executed him."

Two police and four civilians were injured in the shooting at the sprawling wholesale food market, and remain in hospital.

Kiattipong, a native of the northern Thai province of Chiang Rai, was likely a car or motorcycle thief with a violent streak, said lieutenant colonel Aek Aungsananont, police commander of the central region.

When police searched Kiattipong's Bangkok apartment, they found ammunition including AK-47 magazines and pistol bullets as well as machetes and knives. His computer was full of articles about firearms, Aek said.

"He was obsessed with firearms, similar to the South Korean gunman, and witnesses said he was introverted," Aek said, referring to Cho Seung-Hui, who killed 32 people and himself during a shooting spree at Virginia Tech in the United States last month.
