Bombs Explode in Several Places in Bangkok Around 18:00 on Sunday evening local time in Bangkok, bombs exploded in several places acccross the Thai capital killing several people and injuring many more. There is no doubt of the bombs and the coordinated attack, with the first exploding 17:47, but the number of bombs and the size of the damage may be wrongly reported by the sources used for the follwing report: Bombs have reported exploded in the following locations: Victory Monument near a bus station outside the Dok Yai bookstore Saphan Kwai near the Big C supermarket Seacon Square, in the car park Klong Toey, at the fresh market Khai Rai crossing Sukhumvit Soi 62, the Ekamai interserction At the Sapan Kwai incident, a witness saw a man dropped a grenade from a pedestrian bridge just over the police box. Organisers of the event at Sanam Luang announced the decision after the blast attacks took place as people are gearing up to celebrate the new year. PM asks people to avoid crowded parties Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont has asked people to refrain from joining crowded new year party following at least seven bomb attacks in Bangkok. Thai New Agency quoted Surayud as asking people wishing to join new year party on Sunday night to avoid crowded areas. Den danske ambassade i Thailand følger situationen tæt og er løbende i kontakt med de thailandske myndigheder. De thailandske myndigheder har oplyst, at der ikke er udlændinge blandt ofrene. Det vides ikke, hvem der står bag bombesprængningerne. Situationen i Thailand efter militærkuppet den 19. september 2006 er de fleste steder normal. Der opretholdes fortsat militær undtagelsestilstand. En civil overgangsregering er udpeget og vil skulle lede Thailand frem til det forventede valg i oktober 2007. Danskere, der opholder sig i Bangkok, rådes til at undgå eventuelle demonstrationer. I visse dele af Sydøstasien er der generelt stor risiko for terrorangreb. Turist- og feriecentre i Thailand kan være blandt de mulige mål, og de thailandske myndigheder har - også i lyset af de voldelige uroligheder i det allersydligste Thailand - indført generelt skærpede sikkerhedsforanstaltninger. Danskere i Thailand bør generelt udvise stor agtpågivenhed. Dette gælder især personer, der er ubekendte med de lokale forhold. Agtpågivenhed bør udvises på offentlige steder, hvor mange vesterlændinge ofte opholder sig, især ved religiøse helligdomme, på restauranter, diskoteker, caféer, barer og lignende. Der har fundet et betydeligt og stigende antal bombesprængninger sted i de nævnte sydlige provinser i det seneste år, og regeringen har på denne baggrund vedtaget et dekret med henblik på undtagelsestilstand i disse områder. Bombeangrebene har især været rettet mod repræsentanter for myndighederne, men der er også i stigende omfang tale om angreb rettet mod den lokale civilbefolkning i form af bombesprængninger i bl.a. Der har desuden været voldsomme sammenstød mellem sikkerhedsmyndighederne og formodede oprørere i Songkhla og Pattani-provinserne. Situationen er fortsat ustabil langs dele af den thailandsk-burmesiske grænse, og rejsende bør udvise forsigtighed i disse områder. Det anbefales, at rejsende, der ønsker at besøge afsidesliggende områder og områder langs den thailandsk-burmesiske grænse, forinden forhører sig om den aktuelle situation i området hos de lokale myndigheder. Bangkok was rocked by six explosions early in the evening at widely separate parts of the city, completely disrupting New Year's Eve celebrations. Tens of thousands of alarmed people swarmed out of the city centre hours before midnight after the capital's major parties were cancelled. One person was killed and at least 17 injured when a powerful bomb went off at the Victory Monument at about 6.30pm. The blast ripped through bus stops, shattering windows at a restaurant and sent debris flying in all directions. The dead man was identified as Songkran Kanjana. His age was not known. "Bodies were scattered all over the place. I didn't know who to help first," an eyewitness told TV reporters. The second fatality was Suwitchai Nakiem, 61, who was killed by a blast near the Na Ranong intersection in the Klong Toei area. The bomb, which was hidden in a trash can near a Chinese spirit shrine, injured three pedestrians and caused a number of cooking-gas cylinders kept nearby to also explode.
